The Stairs

1. Mountain and Moon

2. Mountain and Moon/Trent Janson

3. The Kyza

4. The Kyza

5. Mountain and Moon

Chosen Stairs

The above sketch aligns for Mountain and Moon's studio. The staircase revolves around luxury, regality, grandness, and wealth, as by the client's jewellery production.

The word which inspired the stair, discovery, enabled me to construct this triple split staircase. Each path leads to a different room which has different roles.

To the left, the wall which blocks the fragmented staircase suggests the discovery of the unknown. This is the ideas workshop of Mountain and Moon; where new products are made - hence an unclear metaphor of new production.

The middle staircase is a clear open path where people can see what is ahead of them - the path right to Mountain and Moon's studio. This is visible and obvious to the eye - hence the openness of it.

To the right, the staircase curves right, to a different, higher room. This is the finishing room - hence why it is also tucked away in a different room.

The above staircase is for The Kyza's car production studio. The word which inspired this, machine,  enabled me to construct a stair revolving around a large drill piece. Due to the studio being underground, I was motivated by underground machines. Each tread is made of nuts and bolts - so all parts are forming a semi-metaphorical giant machine - a production line which creates the cars. The stairs are on the drill leading up to the showroom.

CHOSEN TEXTURES:
1:

For: Mountain and Moon. A marble material with the swirls as its texture and appearance - symbolic of rich, luxurious status of Mountain and Moon jewellery production

2:
For: The Kyza. The circuit represents technology = futuristic and modern as of the_kyza's extremely futuristic and 'new' car model

3:

For: The Kyza. Represents high voltage electrical currents passing through (see middle with lightning) - from the_kyza's 'machine' production which requires electricity and energy to run

The 18 Sketches

Chosen Section:
I decided to change the sections that would be implemented into the SketchUp model. Above ground would be "Mountain and Moon's" luxurious jewellery production - the noun associated with this would be DISCOVERY. Below ground is The Kyza's distinctive and futuristic production space - the noun associated to this would be MACHINE. To capture this factory setting, I decided to make The Kyza's section below ground; and thus make Mountain and Moon's above ground.

Discovery - (Mountain and Moon) - changed to ABOVE GROUND

Machine - (The Kyza) - changed to BELOW GROUND

Exp 1 Part 1 Submission

Cutaway view of context with stairs

Close up of detail including scale

High angle view - 'The Suspended Spiral' - section has been cut away to show how it has passed through floor to upper level

View through window (see the sketched section on below post) - showing expanse and spread of stairs; representing gradeur and regality of Mountain and Moon workshop

View standing on top step, looking downwards from Mountain and Moon workshop. Curvaceous half of spiral shown - on the left, the hand rail, on the right; suspension ropes which keep the stair up

THE EXPLANATION

To capture the ideological underpinning of 'luxury' and 'grandeur' by the client, Mountain and Moon (upper level), I utilised a spiral staircase to suggest modernism and futurist growth. The materials of marble and stone further capture this as one entering the building sees the wide, unconfined spiral staircase leading from a basic wooden room to a grand, regal room with stunning white marble walls and tiled floors. The stair encompasses them on a journey upwards; the spiral being wide stops them from feeling confined. The noun which highly inspired this section, "DISCOVERY" is in the epitome of the individual's mindset as they progress up into a new world venturing into what seems like an ethereal experience.
